Grounding Into the Journey
Morning Class/ Yoga Session with Amira
Little Africa Tour
The highlight of today will be a tour of Little Africa. We will learn about Afro-Brazilian history and culture. We'll explore downtown with our guides and enjoy beautiful artwork and graffiti. We'll make a stop for coffee and refreshment and resume again. The tour will be 2-3 hours. Bring an umbrella for the rain/sun and comfortable shoes.
After the tour, we will head back to the hotel to relax. We’ll gather again 2 hours before sunset and make our way to Sugarloaf mountain for breathtaking views of Rio.
Evening circle with Amira
After breakfast we will drive up the hills to visit the beautiful Christ the Redeemer statue. We will make stops and enjoy various view points of the city.
Christ the Redeemer, a towering statue of Jesus Christ in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, has a rich history that began with a proposal in the mid-1850s. While initially rejected, the idea resurfaced in the early 20th century, fueled by concerns about secularism and a desire to celebrate Brazil's independence. Construction began in 1922 and culminated with the statue's inauguration in 1931.
Afterwards we'll head to the Escadria Selaron, a landmark public stairway adorned by artist Jorge Selarón with colorful & hand-painted tiles. The art scene in Rio is flourishing and interesting. We will learn about various artists and their contribution to Brazilian culture.
Evening circle and stretches with Amira.
After breakfast, we'll head out to a lovely scenic hike in the Tijuca forest. Afterwards, you'll have a free day to explore Rio. You can enjoy the rooftop pool at our hotel or a walk on the beach and explore some of our favourite restaurants. We highly recommend a massage, followed by painting on the beach, a walk around Ipanema for great foot. (Can you tell we're into food?)
If you're into heights , you can sign up for a helicopter tour of Rio. You can also sign up for a hike, cooking class or a bike tour of Rio with a local. The options are endless! This will be a great opportunity to get to know other attendees and spend quality time with them.
Evening circle and stretches with Amira in the evening.
After breakfast, you'll have free time and we’ll head to out to Jumua prayer and spend time with the Muslim community. You will be able to ask some of the brothers and sisters in the community about their experience as Muslims in Brazil.
After lunch you will enjoy a martial art class with one of Rio’s best teachers.
You'll be free to enjoy your evening after sunset. Evening circle with Amira.
After breakfast, we'll explore Isla Grande. Ilha Grande is an island in the Brazilian state of Rio de Janeiro ringed by beaches, covered by Atlantic forest and crossed by winding trails. On its southeastern shore, the long, palm-lined stretch of Lopes Mendes Beach is known for its strong surf. Lagoa Azul, in the island’s north, has sheltered, fish-filled waters.
Please note that this is an optional excursion. Costs: $100 USD. Should you chose to opt out you can enjoy a free day in Rio! You can also enjoy a surfing or cycling class.
Today we will enjoy a session on Capoeira. Capoeira is a Brazilian martial art that combines elements of dance, acrobatics, and music, originating among enslaved Africans in Brazil. It evolved from a need for self-defense and resistance against oppression, often disguised as a dance to avoid detection. Today, it's a globally recognized art form with distinct styles and cultural significance.
We'll begin our with some movement, a short 40 minute hike to enjoy a view of Rio one last time. We'll head back to the hotel to give you all some time for last minute shopping. We will connect again for an early dinner and closing remarks.
We're sad to see you go and pray that you enjoyed every minute of our time together! May Allah keep you safe.
